First Overseas Hackathon to Nurture STEM Future Talent by VTC STEM Education Centre

Travelling to Japan could be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for some of our students, which may well be true for nine students from Engineering and Information Technology Disciplines who took part in an international competition in Fukuoka City - International Hackathon for Training Next Generation Engineers under the theme of "IoT x Robotics x Disaster Prevention", jointly organised by Progress Polytechnic Resources Growth Consortium and Fukuoka City Science Museum, between 16 and 18 November 2018.

3-day Ideathon and Hackathon. This competition attracted 40 students from 11 education institutions to participate in the 3-day competition. Our VTC students well mixed with Japanese and Singapore students in the competition where enabled them to realise a solution in attempt to address disaster prevention in Japan, in which it brings STEM learning to life by encouraging students to solve real-world challenges and problems around you and your city. Ultimately, our VTC students won three out of four awards – The Grand Prize with two Sponsorship Awards.

Industry visit and culture exploration. Students also paid visits to multiple renowned local companies and cultural heritage in Japan so as to understand numerous cutting-edge technologies and local culture.

Upon their return, students will be able to share experiences with their peers and continue their studies at the VTC with a new perspective. We are looking forward to seeing more students in knowledge exchange on various platforms with different perspectives in the future.
